Oedipus cannot figuratively see this truth, and so rejects the seer’s words, placing his physical sight above the insight offer by Tiresias. The irony is that the blind man can see the situation with far more clarity than can the person with sight, thereby disputing the perceived superiority of superficial senses. When Oedipus finally comes to accept the truth, he rejects his sight, violently blinding himself as a symbolic rejection of his superficial ableism. One might also suggest that the ability to hear was likewise a contributing factor in the tragedy. Both Oedipus and his parents hear the prophecy whereby Oedipus kills his father and marries his mother, and both trust what they hear so explicitly, that they take actions that eventually lead to the tragedy. If these parties were more willing to question the perceived infallibility of their senses, then the tragedy may have been prevented, or realized sooner. Instead, each of the key players embraces the fallacy of infallible senses and their arrogance serves to form the tragic plot. Oedipus Rex is difficult to enjoy for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that modern translations cannot capture the metre, rhythm and rhyme of the source material (though did a respectable job of translating the edition I read). The plotting is too famous to create any degree of suspense or revelation, and the characters are almost strictly used for narration, leaving little room for engaging character development. These deficiencies aside, the play remains one that is rich for interpretation. The narrative reads as if it were written by a Grecian incarnation of , encapsulating the nuances of theories central existentialist conversations. It likewise offers a dialogue that allows for a rich ecocritical reading, whilst engaging in conversations on ableism. Though flawed, the play remains relevant, carrying sharp and poignant echoes from antiquity to contemporary readers and encouraging them not to fall victims to the same human weaknesses that led to tragedy for Oedipus. Sadly, however, humanity seems slow in learning the simple messages. If you enjoyed this post and would updates on my latest ramblings, be sure to follow me on Twitter @. Works Cited: Sophocles.
